Flight Simulator Controls – Build Your Home Cockpit
If you have been using your flight simulator software for some time, there will come a time when you would like to upgrade your flying experience and make it more realistic. The best way of doing that is to ditch the keyboard, mouse and even the joystick and go and start building up some controls for your home cockpit. Even with a few basic controls, you flying will be totally transformed.
There are a number of controls that you can connect to your flight simulator software to make it more realistic, but the first place to start may be with your computer setup. Is your computer powerful enough to display the graphics smoothly? You may want to look and upgrading your computer or graphics card, to make sure you are getting the best view as you fly in the virtual world. Another improvement you could make with your computer setup is to add a couple of extra monitors. Three screens will give you the wraparound effect, with views forward and to the sides and you will get a feeling that you are immersed in your aircraft.
Now that you are happy with the computer and screen setup, you can add some flying controls. The flight simulator yoke is the control that you should add first. The yoke is the most basic control and will make the most difference to the realism of your flying experience. The yoke is also known as the control column or wheel and controls the ailerons and elevators. As you not doubt know, the yoke controls the pitch of the plane by pushing it forwards and backwards. Obviously, the roll of the aircraft is controlled by turning the yoke from side to side. Some yokes have additional controls and buttons that allow you to control the throttle, mix, prop, gear or it is even possible to program the buttons and map them to any control that you would like.
The yoke will make a huge difference to your flying, but there is one more control that will complete your home cockpit. Rudder pedals obviously control the rudder, allowing you to use the yoke and rudder pedal controls in combination to make turns. The rudder pedals also have toe brakes so that you will no longer be searching the keyboard for the right key, but can use your feet to brake.
Upgrade your computer and monitors, add a flight sim yoke and rudder pedals and you will have a complete home cockpit. You won't look back and wonder how anyone could ever fly with a keyboard and mouse.
